Teenage Kicks

Despite my interview with Blondfire in the last Link, I’ve always been a bit conflicted by pop music in commercials. I’ve come to accept it in recent years, though, as record sales have dropped and a well-placed promo can help a band make a record or buy much-needed equipment.

Cover songs, though, are another matter. The other night I was waiting for Survivor to begin, and this commercial came on.

A nice little tune, right? It also happens to be one of my favorite songs of all time…but not this version. Here’s the original, one of the great late 70’s powerpop/punk songs that also happens to be THE favorite song of the world’s greatest DJ, John Peel.

I guess the silver lining is that it is possible (but not 100% probable) that the band received some nice cash as the original songwriters. Odds are, though, that some record company weasel in Ireland just purchased a new Bentley.

I must also confess that I’m starting to warm up to the new version. Am I a sellout?
